Manchester United´s McTominay suffers knee ligament damage

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay left Old Trafford on crutches following the Red Devils’ 4-1 victory over Newcastle – and boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says he has suffered knee ligament damage.

McTominay was replaced by Paul Pogba at half-time after an all-action first half in which he was perhaps lucky not to be sent off.

He was booked inside the opening 30 seconds and was fortunate not to see the same outcome when he dragged down Miguel Almiron later in the first period.

It was assumed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer replaced him due to him walking a discplinary tightrope, but it is now clear it was due to an injury

Solskjaer said: “He’s done his ligament in the knee probably, I don’t know how bad, let’s see, but the boy has got the biggest heart.

“I’m not sure if he’s going to be ready for Saturday but we have seen him heal quickly before.”

McTominay has established himself as a key part of the United starting line-up under Solskjaer and is also a regular in the Scotland squad at international level.

United scored three goals while he was on the pitch as they came from behind to return to winning ways in front of their home support.

Matty Longstaff scored his second goal versus the Red Devils to open the scoring for Newcastle, but Anthony Martial responded with an effort that Martin Dubravka conceded at his near post.

Mason Greenwood’s screamer fired United in front before Marcus Rashford made it 3-1 with a thumping header from Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s cross. Martial doubled his tally after the break on a comfortable afternoon for United.

It leaves them seventh in the Premier League, five points behind fourth-placed Chelsea who were defeated at home by Southampton.
