Canada’s William Dandjinou captured gold in the men’s 1,500-metre short track speed skating final at a World Cup event on Sunday in Seoul, South Korea.
The Montreal speed skater crossed the finish line in two minutes 18.661 seconds, just ahead of South Korea’s Park Ji Won (2:18.698).
Dandjinou had also collected a silver medal in the same distance in Saturday’s final.
“I am very happy with my day,” said Dandjinou to Speed Skating Canada. “It was an incredible way to end the two weeks in Asia. I didn’t believe I had any legs left to finish like that, but I’m more than satisfied. Plus sharing the podium with Steven [Dubois] in Korea, the capital of short track, is incredible!”
Steven Dubois, of Terrebonne, Que., joined his teammate on the podium on Sunday, taking the bronze medal in a time of 2:18.804.
Dubois’s third-place showing came one day after he collected gold in the 1,000m final, and he now leads the overall rankings in the race for the Crystal Globe with 683 points, two points ahead of Park and 79 ahead of third-place Dandjinou.
“Will [Dandjinou] had such a perfect race,” said Dubois to Speed Skating Canada. “As soon as I crossed the line, I was like ‘what a good race’. It was insane. I was definitely not expecting to be coming out on top [of the Crystal Globe standings] at the end of this part of the season. I know what I have to work on and there will not be too much turkey for me [during the holidays].”
The Canadian team will leave South Korea with a total of six medal wins, including the two gold collected by Dandjinou and Dubois.
The short track World Cup circuit continues in February with an event in Dresden, Germany.
