Messi Provides Hattrick Assist On Sergio Ramos’ Debut In PSG 3-1 Comeback Win Over Saint Etienne

Paris Saint-Germain came from behind to overcome Saint-Etienne and set up a 14-point advantage over the rest of the Ligue 1 pack with Lionel Messi directly involved in all three goals Les Parisiens scored in a man of the match performance.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side had a number of oportunities in the first 45 minutes, but it took an injury-time equalizer to bring them level at the break. After a lengthy VAR review, Neymar’s goal was ruled out, and Kylian Mbappe was twice denied by Etienne Green with just the goalie to beat.

Denis Bouanga’s goal in the 31st minute elicited jubilant applause from the home crowd, but their delight was short-lived.

Sergio Ramos made his long-awaited PSG debut, but it was his opposite number, Thimothee Kolodziejczak, who grabbed the headlines after being controversially sent off for a last-man tackle on Kylian Mbappe. Marquinhos leveled PSG with a superb header from Lionel Messi’s ball from the subsequent free-kick.

Following the resumption, it was all one-way traffic as PSG lay siege to the home side’s goal.

Mbappe, on the other hand, wasted a golden chance, and Messi missed an even easier chance a few minutes later, before Angel Di Maria completed the comeback with 11 minutes left.

There was still one more goal for the visitors as Marquinhos would not be denied his double header nor Messi be denied his hattrick of assists. He may not have scored but the Argentine talisman is proving his worth in the French side.

In the end, the referee’s decision to dismiss Kolodziejczak just before the whistle went for the first half will enrage Saint-Etienne.

When Kolodziejczak fouled Mbappe, there appeared to be a covering defender, and everyone expected a yellow card to be shown when the referee blew the whistle. The match official, on the other hand, had a different opinion, and showed the red card, making Saint-Etienne’s task of maintaining the lead much more difficult.

Even if PSG put up a valiant fight, a comeback appeared inescapable. Messi had three assists, but Mbappe struggled in front of goal. And, the injury to Neymar, who was carried off the field on a stretcher after colliding with his ankle, is another alarming concern for Mauricio Pochettino.
