Canada’s Jennifer Jones saw a three-match winning streak halted by an extra-end, 11-9 defeat to China’s Wang Rui in women’s curling on Wednesday.
The Canadians will take a 4-4 record into their round-robin finale versus Denmark’s Madeleine Dupont on Thursday at 1 a.m. ET. If the Canadians win that match, they will make the playoffs in most, but not all, scenarios.
The Winnipeg skip led Canada to a 7-6 triumph over Tabitha Peterson and the United States earlier on Day 12, but couldn’t keep her streak intact against China.
“We just didn’t make enough shots today,” said Jones.
“They made a really nice shot on their first one [in the eighth end] to kind of set it up, and I thought we were gonna get a two in eight, and she [China’s Wang Rui] made a good one. And then I just rolled a little bit too far to give up the steal, which is kind of unfortunate and change the momentum.”
Canada had a massive fifth-point sixth end that propelled them to an 8-5 lead but couldn’t hold on for the victory.
“Usually, when you get five, it changes the game in your favour. Unfortunately for us, it just didn’t work out today,” said Jones.
“We had the hammer in the extra, and that’s all you can ask for, and we just didn’t execute a very good extra [end].”
Despite the let downs, Jones said she’s “1,000 per cent” still in a good mood.
Canada was tied in fourth place with Great Britain’s Eve Muirhead and South Korea’s EunJung Kim. The top four teams in the 10-team field will reach the semifinals.
The women’s semifinals will be played Friday evening.
“We didn’t focus on our opponents, we were just focusing on our own game and we didn’t care about them. We just followed our strategies and our goals,” said China’s Wang Rui after the match. “We lost five points in one end, but the teams were still neck and neck. So step by step we could catch up.”
